For over a year, it has been consensus opinion that intradomain communications could not take place across an ISA Server because of problem with dynamic protocol/port assignments, Kerberos, and a variety of other "hand-waving" explanations. I admit to being part of this hand-wavers crowd because I didn’t know precisely the cause of intradomain communications failure across an ISA Server.

Protocol rules are processed at the application level of the OSI model. Protocol rules dictate to ISA clients which protocols can be utilized to access resources on the Internet. Protocol rules can be configured to allow or deny the use of one or more protocol definitions.
